Fun Fact: Joshua Tree, California is one of my favorite places on the planet. This Southern California scene is truly awe-inspiring with the unique, adaptable and resilient Joshua Trees scattered through the vast desert landscape. I checked off a bucket list goal to photograph a couple in this magical and mystical space and I truly love these images - some of my favorite I've ever created!
Brandon and Mimi are warm, kind, full of joy and such a vibe. I loved being around their easy energy and deep connection. We spent the afternoon playing in Joshua Tree National Park, taking in the scenery, the golden sunset light, and having the best time together. Joshua Tree provided the perfect backdrop for this intimate sunset shoot and is an iconic location for a wedding or elopement.
For this couple session, I photographed in both digital and film. I love the blend of both mediums to highlight my documentary and editorial styles. The way film records the light is like nothing else - it’s so distinct and tangible - and that warm golden light adds so much romance and nostalgia to the frames. To create a playful and novel experience, I gave the couple a Disposable Kodak Camera toward the end of our session to take candid photos of each other and a bunch of selfies. They couldn’t help but laugh and smile! And I loved developing these prints for the couple as a surprise gift!
An elopement or wedding in Joshua Tree is breathtaking and incredibly picturesque. You do need a special permit for a wedding or elopement in the park, and the National Park Service website gives an overview of items that are permitted for the celebration, like live flowers, a rug, cake and champagne (the essentials!).
If you are flying into the area, the best airport option is the Palm Springs airport, about 1 hour from the park. It's such an easy airport to travel in and out of, and they have rental cars right on site. You can also fly into LA or other SoCal airports, but Palm Springs is your closest option. Plus it's another gorgeous setting to check out!
There are many unique and picturesque AirBnBs for lodging that provide gorgeous views for getting ready and couple portraits.
This intimate sunset couple session in Joshua Tree National Park was a wonderful experience. I am so grateful to have been able to document these special moments for Brandon and Mimi and create lasting memories for them to cherish - and lasting memories for me, too!
If you are planning a Joshua Tree wedding or elopement, I'd love to connect and photograph your love story!
