Bessie + Emily | Intimate Summer Wedding at Bridal Veil Lakes

As I think back on this intimate queer wedding at Bridal Veil Lakes in the Columbia Gorge, I am struck by how purposeful Bessie and Emily were in designing their summer day, their way. I knew from our initial video chats this day would be a treat for my documentary lens, but it was even more magical than I imagined.

Bessie and Emily met me at the trailhead to Bridal Veil Falls, where we hiked down the path to the romantic waterfall location, taking in the luscious views all around us. Bridal Veil Falls was showing off its two tiers, all 120 feet sparkling with the summer light hitting the water, creating the most serene backdrop for Bessie, Emily and their love story. These two have such a beautiful ease and chemistry between them, and it's pure joy to document. It’s so fun to go on photo walks/hikes with my couples and bring joy to strangers as they wish them well and tell them how amazing they look!

The always stunning Bridal Veil Lakes was the setting for the ceremony and reception, surrounded by towering trees and the harmonious sounds of the incredibly talented Cellist Jonathan Villegas. Live music creates such an elevated and memorable experience!

Bessie and Emily artfully planned their ceremony to include each guest in a meaningful way. The chairs formed a circle, with Bessie and Emily closing the top. Each guest was invited to come forward and personally connect with the couple, sharing words of love, advice and heartfelt wishes. The feels during this part! After the ceremony the couple shared a first dance on the lake, where Jonathan played an idyllic version of "Moon River." Swoon! Following cocktail hour and the quintessential canoe ride on the lake, Miere Catering treated everyone to their delicious creations from the custom wedding menu.

A design element I always adore is one long table for dinner. It doesn't always make sense based on the space, number of guests or aesthetic of the event, but when it works, it's one of my favorite ways to watch everyone interact over a meal. And it's just so beautiful in photos! And I adore the open outdoor space at Bridal Veil Lakes - so perfect for a summer soiree like this one.

I'm so thankful to have been part of this beautiful queer wedding and to share the story through my lens. I even took a roll of black and white film - scroll to the end to see some of my favorite gems! Enjoy! 🩷 - Angelina
